A day at The Family History Show, London

The Family History Show, London has now released a video of interviews with some of the many happy exhibitors. Comments from the stall holders included just how busy they had been throughout the day and what a friendly environment the venue had been. Other exhibitors mentioned what an excellent fair it had been with a good turn out and many interesting stalls that had engaged and impressed those visiting the event.

You can see the video on their website (or on YouTube) along with another recorded with international genealogical blogger Dick Eastman who shares his views on the event: https://thefamilyhistoryshow.com/london/

The large crowds of show visitors testified to the public’s willingness to support this event, now double the size from last years show. Perhaps made more popular by its low cost entry, free car parking and free mini-bus to and from the rail station. The various free talks held in the two good sized lecture theatres were well attended throughout the day as was the new free ‘Ask the Experts’ zone.

The Family History Show, London is destined to return next year for its third outing on 24th August 2019. To book a table or stand go to: https://thefamilyhistoryshow.com/london/booking-form/

Thomas, Lord Fairfax and the Second Civil War - Talk at TNA in Kew

News from The National Archives -  Free Talk 23 August 2018

This talk will assess the role played by Lord Fairfax, the commander-in-chief of the New Model Army, in securing victory for Parliament in the South-East of England during the Second Civil War.

The talk will include a discussion of Fairfax’s controversial role in the bloody siege of Colchester, encompassing why parliamentarian retribution was more severe in Essex than in Kent. There will also be an original document display.

Dr Andrew Hopper (University of Leicester) is the author of Black Tom: Sir Thomas Fairfax and the English Revolution, and co-editor of England’s Fortress: New Perspectives on Thomas, 3rd Lord Fairfax.

Families in British India Society conference 28 - 30 September

FIBIS 20th anniversary conference is to be held at Hawkwell House Hotel, Iffley, Oxford. Friday 28th to Sunday 30th September 2018. This weekend conference is for both members and non-members of the Families in British India Society with an interest in the period of British involvement in India from 1600 to 1947.

The varied lectures cover family and historical research topics. In this final year of the WWI centenary, the conference showcases the FIBIS project detailing recruits to WWI from the community of Anglo-Indians and domiciled Europeans, a view of the Gurkha Regiment over 200 years and advice on researching Indian Army records. Remembering 1947, there will be a lecture on Partition and Independence viewed through the contemporary newsreel and camera lens.

The Conference also considers different approaches to individual family research, from the science of DNA to the very subjective memories evoked by sharing a kitchen!

The actress Diana Quick also relates her typical Anglo-Indian family story and the research and journeys that it inspired.

Alongside the lecture programme there will be workshops and opportunities for one to one help, and time to network and compare notes with other delegates, buy books, meet the speakers and authors and join in social activities.

You can book for the conference at https://www.fibis.org/events/fibis-20th-anniversary-conference/

The Family History Show, York a great success

The Family History Show at York held on the 23rd June was a fantastic success.

The people attending the event run by Discover Your Ancestors Magazine certainly seemed to be enjoying all that was on offer from family history societies to the expert's talks. As we went around asking the exhibitors for their reaction it was universally very positive with comments about how busy it had been and how they would be back next year.

I'm now looking forward to the London show run by the same organisers at Sandown Park Racecourse on the 22nd September.

I hope to see you there!
