"Created from the perspective of state and empire, we hold important records that bear witness to past injustice, and the long and continued fight for racial equality."

The National Archives are playing their part in finding greater ways to make their significant records more accessible.

Beyond the Death Certificate - Online Talk Saturday 23 September at 3pm BST

Beyond the Death Certificate with Julie Goucher (1-hour talk)

Saturday, 23 September 2023 14:00 -Saturday, 23 September 2023 15:00

The Society of Genealogist's online talk this Saturday is one that will be of interest to many family historians.

According to the SoG website in this presentation they will focus on looking beyond the Death Certificate. What happens when you register a death and the process through to the service/burial or cremation.

There are quite a lot of moving parts and in this presentation, Julie Goucher will explore how those parts slot together and why they might exist. We explore the differences between registration of a death in England and Wales, to that of a death in Scotland. Furthermore, they will consider the conditions on the death certificate which do not necessarily represent all the conditions that the person experienced, and how you might explore those, whilst being aware of the restrictions of accessing medical records.

The online talk will also look at context and how that is useful to give us insight. Also looking at tracking the genealogy of death conditions, effectively instead of having names, event dates and places, this is replaced by names, places, and causes of death and does this assist in. Julie will also look at the names of conditions and classification of conditions and the various relevant legislation. Whilst there are references to England, Wales and Scotland, this overall presentation is suitable to all.

Researching 17th Century Ancestors with Else Churchill

The Society of Genealogists is presenting a course aimed at taking your research back into the 1600s. Away from the pressures of life for a weekend, you can focus on how to find your earlier ancestors and flesh out your family’s history. If you sign up for this online course you will spend time with other people in the class that share your interests and are as keen as you are to learn new skills. Most of us enjoy meeting and learning from expert genealogists and we find others’ ancestry almost as fascinating as our own.

The SoG 2-day intensive course covers:

The Commonwealth Gap

Civil Wars

Migration to the Americas

Parish Registers and Records

Heraldic Visitations

Grammar Schools and Universities

London Guilds and Livery Companies

Taxation

Old Poor Law

Sources for English Civil War soldiers

Court records and Quarter Sessions

Nonconformity

17th Century Probate

Using case studies, document workshops and small group discussions alongside lectures you will learn about England in the 17th Century the sources available to research your ancestors in this period, and what their life would have been like.

On Saturday afternoon guest speaker Tim Healey presents "Sex, Drink and Death in the 17th Century" a romp through the pleasures and perils of life in this turbulent era, featuring bawdy frolics, alehouse revels, highway robberies, Civil War, fire and plague. Hugely entertaining, the talk also gives insight into evolving customs - of courtship, celebration, faith and burial.

From 10:30am to 5 pm on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September on Zoom.

Students will then have access to the recording of each talk for two weeks.

National Archives blog that "the gloves are still off"

Back in 2013 The National Archives in the UK decided that it no longer required the wearing of white gloves during document handling. Now, in an update ten years on, they have set out their rational as to why the gloves are still off at Kew.

Check out their new blog post here: https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/handling-historic-collections-the-gloves-are-still-off/

Key points are that the "wearing gloves reduces sensitivity in your fingers, which can be problematic when handling fragile or already-damaged documents. Cotton gloves in particular can catch easily on torn or uneven edges, can transfer dirt between surfaces and do not provide a moisture-proof barrier, all of which can lead to further damage. Additionally, poorly-fitting gloves can make it difficult to handle large or heavy items safely, increasing the risk of accidental damage."
