Echoes of the Past 2014

This weekend sees the second family history fair to be held at The Lincolnshire Showground. Echoes of the Past will be on this Sunday 26th October from 10am to 4pm at the EPIC Centre, Lincolnshire Showground. Entry is £4 per person and there is free parking. There is also a free hourly bus shuttle service to and from Lincoln city centre. There will be free talks throughout the day including the popular 'Breaking down brick walls' talk from Mark Bayley of TheGenealogist. It promises to be another great event, if you live in or near the Lincoln area, it's well worth attending the event! Bristol & Avon Family History Open Day

This Saturday 27th September is the Bristol & Avon Family History Open Day. It's on from 10am to 4pm at The University of the West of England in Bristol.  Entry is £2 per person and young people under 16 have free entry.

There's a number of excellent talks happening throughout the day including the popular 'Breaking down brick walls' with Mark Bayley from TheGenealogist, Jacqueline Wadsworth 'The Effects of World War 1 on home life' and Clive Burton 'Bristol at the outbreak of World War 1 and the formation of Bristol's Own'.

If you have ancestors in the Somerset, Gloucestershire or Avon areas, or live nearby, why not visit the Bristol & Avon Family History Open Day?

Latest free event at The National Archives

The National Archives have announced a number of talks and events, many of them free over the coming months. With the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War,  there's a free talk  on the 5th August 2014 at 2pm entitled: "The Royal Navy and British Army Go To War:  Mobilisation and their Roads to War 1914." This talk will discuss what happened to the Royal Navy and the British Army between the end of July and the end of the first week in August 1914, how the two services were mobilised for war and what records The National Archives holds and what the records tell us. The speaker will be William Spencer, the Principal military specialist at The National Archives. After confirmation that the Who Do You Think You Are? Live show was moving from London Olympia to the NEC in Birmingham, the actual show dates have now been formally announced for the event next year. The show is now scheduled to take place between the 16th to the 18th April 2015. Falling later than the usual February show, it's a real break with tradition, with the event organisers hoping a different date and different location (with easier parking) will enable more visitors to attend than ever before. Will you be going and what do you think of the new venue for the show?

Yorkshire Family History Fair 2014

This forthcoming weekend, Saturday 28th June, sees one of the major family history shows in the North of England, the Yorkshire Family History Fair. It is one of the largest family history shows in the UK , now in its 19th year and there are over 70 exhibitors expected on three floors. There is plenty of parking, refreshments are available all day and lifts to take visitors to all three floors.  The fair is open from 10am to 4.30pm and features a number of free talks including Mark Bayley from TheGenealogist. If you've not been before, the fair is at The Knavesmire Exhibition Centre, The Racecourse, York YO23 1EX. Admission is £4.50 for adults and children under 14 have free admission. 8th Unlock the Past Cruise announced for 2015

Following the success of previous genealogy cruises, 'Unlock the Past' , the genealogy cruise specialists, have announced a new cruise for 2015. The 8th Unlock the Past Cruise will tour the Baltic and as well as visiting a number of European countries, will feature a selection of leading family history specialists giving talks on how to discover your ancestors. Bookings are now being taken for this 14 night cruise which starts  from Southampton on Saturday 11 July  and returns on Saturday 25 July. The cruise takes in Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Conference speakers for the main talks will be announced nearer the time. 'Fabulous Finchley' walk on the 17th May

If you're keen to combine your research with an energetic walk, the Society of Genealogists has organised a walk around Finchley to visit an ancient road which links two ancient villages. The walk will take in lands once owned by the Knights Templar and a former manor house  which is haunted by a suspected lover of Anne Boleyn. The walk also takes in two famous murders and two uncrowned kings connected to the area.

The walk is on Saturday, 17 May from 11:00-12:30, with Paul Baker. The cost is £10.00/£8.00 SoG members. You must pre-book to attend and more details can be found on the Society of Genealogists website.

Final few places left for half day course at Society of Genealogists

Tomorrow, Saturday 3rd May,  sees a half day course entitled 'Poor Law Records & What it was like to be Poor'. It's presented by Celia Heritage and Michael Gandy from 2pm to 5pm at the Society of Genealogists in London and cost to attend is £20. The talk looks at the records created by the parish poor law system and the post 1834 workhouse system (and wider records) to find information about our poorer ancestors.
